Dr. Walsh is awarded the NARSAD grant for Next-Generation Therapies! She notes that rapid elevation of serotonin activity enhances sociability and promotes appropriate social behavior, and suggests that the speed and degree of serotonin enhancement may be a critical regulator of its therapeutic effects. Dr. Walsh cites preliminary data suggesting a two-dose regimen of the psychedelic compound MDMA can cause lasting increases in sociability in mice with a specific genetic deletion. She seeks to identify the circuit, cellular, and molecular adaptations underlying this therapeutic phenomenon.
